Particle Physics Island: The discovery of the Higgs boson

 

4th July 2012, Geneva: the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider announced they had each observed a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson, the last missing particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics

I did have this gut feeling of it being unexpected that the maths behind this actually did have anything to do with the real world and this bump was the evidence that it did.
